In recent decades, there has been a growing instance of obesity across all age groups and in most countries in the world. Part of the reason for this is the much greater availability of food in bigger quantities and an increase in the availability of ready-made meals. Being overweight or obese is more common than it has ever been, and is shown to impact on our health and wellbeing.

Managing your weight can be difficult when there are many demands on your time and finances. Regular exercise and healthier food choices will help you to manage your weight. While BetterOff has extensive expertise in weight management, health and wellbeing, the project is focused on a national approach to reversing the trend of obesity, as opposed to providing suggestions and support to individuals. You can talk to your GP or a nutritionist if this is something you wish to address.

The impact on our health system through obesity related diseases will be unprecedented, due to diseases such as type 2 diabetes and its consequences such as kidney failure and the need for dialysis and transplants, amputations, cardio vascular failure.

According to the National Health and Medical Research Council, obesity causes or increases your risk of a many diseases, including:

  • diabetes
  • obstructive sleep apnoea
  • polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • hypertension
  • abnormal lipids
  • liver disease
  • some cancers
  • heart attack and stroke
